Oil on canvas panel 9" by 12" plein air. Nice cloud patterns above the Golden Gate 2 days ago. The next storm came in last night. This was painted between 4:30 and 6:00 PM and the color is from a fairly low sun. Lots of glare on the water and fog coming in over the Marin Headlands. The North tower of the Golden Gate Bridge is just visible. Those sailboats have another hour before sunset but there wasn't much wind. I loved the diagonal patterns in the wispy clouds and the simplicity of the shapes I saw.

Thanks Olivia. Not much color in the painting and very high key. Value structure carries the load plus warm and cool grays make the statement for it.

Very atmospheric and those clouds were a gift.

Thanks Ann. One of the nice things about painting "contre jour" (into the day literally) is that these backlit scenes have simpler shapes and increased contrast because of the lighting. I need all the practice I can get in simplification and plein air painting is the best way I know of to overcome an addiction to detail in painting. Stu

Yes, Simple and beautiful!

Thanks Silvana. There is relatively little color in this. The abstract design of the clouds and the value structure do everything. Stu
