Plein Air Demo Step by Step
My Setup:
I use a homemade pochade box and camera tripod. All my supplies except the tripod pack into an Osprey (from REI) 22” carryon that can be wheeled, carried or used as a back pack. My tripod straps to the back of it. The carryon fits under airline seats and is very durable. There are plenty of straps on it to attach other equipment. The wheels work well if the ground is not too rough and it’s relatively comfortable on your…

In your efforts to loosen up your paintings by using such brush alternatives as old credit cards, you may be suffering from "brush withdrawal". Here are some ideas to help you through the transition:
#1. Pick a catchy name for your credit card: I used an expired AAA (American Automobile Assn.) card and though of renaming it my Amazing Art Applicator or my Almost Abstract Art card. You could name…

Making Textured Panels
Materials for and preparation of the panels:
I use 1/4" MDF (medium density fiberboard) or 1/4" finish grade plywood (birch is less porous than oak). I buy 2 ft by 4 ft sheets (about $10) at the home store (Home Depot) and cut them up on my table saw to size. I most commonly make 9" by 12", 11" by 14" and 12" by 16" panels. After…

Hey -- congrats, Stu -- much deserved! You work hard and it shows! You are inspiration. Hope to see you again soon.
Hi Stu, You are in the Fox6 Plein Aire news.

What a complete pleasure it was meeting you and your lovely wife. Thank you for making the drive over the hill Monday morning just so we could meet. I felt, after communicating for so long here, that I already knew you well; so, it was a real pleasure actually meeting you in person.
I'm sure you know what a delightful person Richard is after spending time with him in Paso. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop, and watching him paint in real time. He truly is an outstanding teacher. My sister-in-law, Karen, has gone to many workshops given by famous artists in Laguna. She said that by far, Richard is the best teacher she has ever experienced. Not only is he a great teacher, but he is also extremely generous. He is emailing to each of us photos and the lessons of the workshop, and giving us as many videos as would make up for the cost of the workshop. WOW! Anyway, I loved every moment...it made me feel like a real person again. You are right, I need to get away more often.
Maybe next year, he will come back and you will join us. He said he may do a workshop in Santa Cruz. Karen told him that he and his family could stay with her (they have a huge house) and do a workshop there. He says he would love to paint in Laguna. We shall see.
Thank you again for making the trip to meet. Hope you had a very Happy Birthday.
Nancy
Stuart I just wanted to tell you how pleased that you would think of me to send me an invitation to your evening at Marin Open Studios Preview Gala. It sounds like such a wonderful evening and I do wish I could attend but NM is a far distance to CA so I must decline. I hope it is a great time and others (friends) will be there with you. Roena
I wrote to him, but have not heard back. Maybe he has no idea how to do it either. I will keep my old email until I am sure not to lose everything.
Great that you will hopefully come down for the workshop. I am so looking forward to it and to meeting you after all this time.
Nancy
Thank you, Stu. I will do that. I do not want to lose everything in My Page by creating a new account. Richard must know of an easy way to do that.
Have you decided about joining the Paso workshop?
Nancy
I have another technical question. I changed my email address and do not know how to make that change in this site. Can you help?
Hope so.
Nancy
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave me a favorable comment on my latest video on drawing tricks. I appreciate it very much. Roena
I wish you could also join the workshop. It would be such fun painting with you...and meeting you. I wasn't planning on going to the Art Fest, but if that is the only time you can be there, I will come for sure. I can get away in the afternoons. Do you know if any others from your area are planning to come down? I am so looking forward to May.
Thanks Stuart for the Christmas wishes........and many more back to you. Lovely painting of the clouds. I am glad you are getting to get out and paint between the rain showers! Wish you could send some of that wet to NM where we are at the moment praying for snow on top of this mountain! The ski area could not be open at all if it were not for man made snow. That is so sad. I can remember deep snows by Thanksgiving years ago. sad
Merry Christmas! Roena
