Charles, Thank you for your valuable suggestion. I will keep it in mind. I will paint another one with vivid colours to see how the colour work and how to soften the background. It will be more difficult to do so by using vivid colours.

Another suggestion would be to soften the background if you liked the atmosphere and mood in the photo.

Good beginning Ningning!   ....  this is a study, so keep these things in mind when you paint the final painting:  Be accurate with your drawing, 2.  do not paint the local colors of things .... paint the light and atmosphere ....  those greens, reds, and oranges are too warm and bright ... they must be influenced by your cool light and gray atmosphere.  Those greens should be more grayed blue/green.  The boat in the distance ... cannot be that orange ..must be like the other boats .. shrouded in the atmosphere.  Be careful of those bright reds ..  once again, gray them with the atmosphere color.  EVERYTHING should have the atmosphere color mixed into it.  Think more on how you can arrange the composition so the foreground does not look so busy .. try to simplify that foreground by taking something out .. all that stuff is not needed there.   You can rearrange things anyway your want ... you do not need to copy exactly the photo.   Looking forward to seeing you progress on this one, my friend.  :)))

I am so happy that I paint something grey though it is not very beaultiful, not acurate , no detail.  I start to feel the grey.  I like the mood I created.  Little by little I will close to our teacher's beaultiful grey, at least, I hope so. ha,ha,ha...
