Britt, thank you for your thoughts. I have to agree with you. With the argument you bring forward here, I also find my original title not really adequate. Therfore I have changed it.
Happy painting of the beautiful and again, thanks a lot!

Thomas, I think this is well-painted.  I personally paint "romantic subjects" as my best friend tells with a roll of her eyes.  My life has been as )@$*%)@% up as this painting content.  For me the therapy of painting is just being able to see the good, the beautiful.  I have no desire to show the crap I've been through.  That being said, I absolutely admire the bravery of folks who do paint the ugly--as long as they do it well ; ).  As an adult literacy teacher of seven years, I do take issue with your title, though.  There is enough misplaced shame in illiteracy as it is without perpetuating causation myths.  May I suggest alternate titles to this effect: "Shopping list of the broken,Shopping list of the damaged, outsider treasures, pigeon treasure, another man's treasure, unintended consequences, Shopping list of the struggling, contents of a sea turtle stomach.......

Craig, i really appreciate your open comment on this. When i did this painting i also had my doubts. Questions like:
Can i go for something that might evoke disgust? What will people think about me? Does it possibly offend anyone personnally?
I do not see how it would offend and went for it. I felt more excitement doing this than most of my recent still life painting. "Wow, the world is more than apples and flowers and i have the freedom to paint what i want." I had not internalized the power of this freedom before and still haven't in its full. However, i should use this freedom, like any other, carefully.
It is not easy to stand up and express a "don't like". Craig, thanks for doing it!
