Oil on canvas panel, 6" by 12", studio painting and a study for a larger piece. I was headed back to Northern California from the Eastern Sierras after a plein air workshop and had to stop to photograph the sunrise over Owen's Lake. I plan to take this up to an 18" by 36" painting on stretched canvas. I will have to put in more detail. Any comments, critiques, suggestions will be most appreciated.

Thanks Ann; I will certainly address that but probably not until I scale it up. Stu

Food for thought, What might Johannas say ? Maybe, The right and left side of the painting echo each other, you need more variety of form and color.

Thanks Laura! It was that sky that I saw out my car window while driving South toward Mojave that made me take the photo.

Thanks Ann. I will work out the design for the lake in the next couple of days and probably paint my larger version next week. I will post what I do here or create a little blog on up scaling from the small study and put step by step photos.

It is great! Specially I love the sky!

It will be interesting to see the painting larger. I agree that the sectioned light on the water could be simplified especially in a larger version where it would take up more canvas space with that high contrast.

Thanks Michael!  Since I did this from my photos, those weren't really there, but need to be, especially with the lighted sky.   I am going to fix the design of Owen's Lake which had very little water in it to make less shapes and I will warm up the foreground and lighten a little before I scale up to a larger painting with more detail.   This was mainly a value and color study but missed on the foreground hues.   I have only spent about an hour on each of these paintings and wanted the kind of input that I am getting here before scaling up, so I really appreciate your input!
