oil on canvas panel, 9: by 12", plein air. This is one of my favorite painting spots at a place called "Bullhead Flat" in the China Camp State Park. The bay is very shallow here and at low tide the patterns of light on the water rivulets running through the mudflats and on the very green marine grasses are interesting to paint.

Thanks Jessica!  I really enjoyed getting out and painting after a 3 week spell of painting only in my studio!

Thanks Silvana! Actually this is a canvas panel that I did add texture to with the Liquitex Super Heavy Gesso and then applied an alkyd modified oil based primer (Gamblin's Oil Ground). I like to paint outdoors on oil primed linen panels, but often buy less expensive canvas panels and apply the Gamblin oil ground. I also do this with textured panels that I will be using for plein air painting. The main reason for this is that the oil primed panels do not suck up all the linseed oil in the paint like the acrylic primed panels. When I use the more expensive oil primed linen panels, I use either Raymar panels or Centurian panels. The Raymar panels have a coarser weave linen than the Centurian panels. I would not use the Super Heavy Gesso to texture these panels because you should not apply water based products over oil. I do sometimes texture these panels with Gamblin's Fastmatte alkyd paints applied thickly with a large brush to provide the texture.
