It is very beautiful! The colour and textures almost like Chinese silk painting, interesting.
Thanks Laura for your comments and encouragement. Michael the title change was an easy fix ! I will "spruce" up the tree when he drys a little, he turned into a dark green/grey/purple thing so I started scratching to bring some life . I'll add some overlaying branches some lighter values and I got a little carried away with little branches but it was fun to scratch them out and I didn't stop when I should have.
Hi Ann, your composition looks good ...this would be an "O" composition favored by Edgar Payne. Now, you have titled this "Monterey Cypress", which implies that your concept will be a description or portrait of the cypress. So your cypress tree must be the main star here. ......but it is not ..it is a secondary character to the cliffs. Your cliffs are the star in your painting. You are saying ..MONTERY CYPRESS! ..but your cypress is trying to hide in the corner with stage fright. In order for your cypress to be the star, you must be more bold with it! ...make it larger, darker value, richer color, and maybe some dramatic interest by playing some sunlight on it here and there. Put some of those branches in shadow and some in sunlight ..give it sparkle. I think the cypress requires at least 2 more values. Now if you meant for the cliff to be the area of interest, ....then you nailed it and I will stand corrected.
