oil on stretched canvas, 18" by 36", studio. This is my larger painting from a photo reference taken two months ago on my way back from Lone Pine, CA in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. I had painted the alpenglow on Mt. Whitney two days before and stopped to take some photos as the sun first rose over the White Mountains to the east of the Owens River. I posted my small study of this (6" by 12") earlier and painted this to go in the Marin County Fair next month. Richard's "Mastering Sunsets" video course and his recent step by step demo in IA have been invaluable aids to me in learning to paint first and last light!!!

Thanks Susan!  It's a great course; do take the time because it will really improve your sunsets.

I've got the 'Mastering Sunsets" videos. I haven't had time to watch them yet; but, judging from your painting here, I should make the time!  Lovely!

Thanks Jon!  I've been helped a lot by Richard's workshops in getting my colors and values right!

Thanks Jessica.  I had to pull my car over to take the photo and when I saw how it came out, I had to paint it.  After doing all the sunsets in Richard's workshops, I am really getting interested in doing more sunrises.  I think that they may be easier to do plein air than sunsets, because you have good light to finish up with a sunrise and poor light when you are finishing a sunset.   My little "Mitey Brite" book lights do help for either one, because you have to either start or finish the painting in the dark.  I am going in 2 weeks to Cedarburg, WI for a plein air event there and plan on doing some first light paintings as well as some nocturnes.  Should be fun!!
