I love that point where you no longer need the photo.
I really like the dramatic elements in this painting. It's as if a bunch of rock formations have gathered together for a grand meeting. The lighting is also excellent and I like how you have marked out different colours for each section.
JJ, I do appreciate your concern about direct copying of a photograph. I had an art teacher who, when we used photos that were not our own, would make sure we cropped them in some way. She considered exact copies to be plagerism. With Richard giving us permission to use his photos, I guess it is not. For this painting, I did crop it a bit, but focused on the lesson of the glow. That is where I started, and then the rest of the painting seemed to take on a life of its own. There was a point when I no longer needed the photo and relied on what seemed to be needed in the painting. What I love most about all of the paintings everyone does is that even though we are all using the exact same photograph as reference, each artist comes up with something completely unique and different from every other artist. It is a joy to see each and every one at the end of the month.
Thank you so very much, Richard. I really appreciate your comments. I am never sure how others see what I do; so, it is nice to read a positive response.
JJ that's entirely up to you - your artist's licence.
Nice one Nancy! Plenty of life and movement in this!
Hi, everyone, I am amazed at the number of paintings uploaded; they are all very beautifully done. One thing troubles me is how truthful we should be to the original photos: too close to the photos doesn't seem right as the photos do a great job capturing every detail possible; and yet too much of your own thing equally makes it less meaningful to have that photo as a reference. I hope someone can offer some suggestions on this
