Comment by Stuart J. Gourlay on March 11, 2013 at 15:15: Never been in there. I was in a coop gallery up and across the street and photographed and painted the local color. Nobody bought it then, but it sold last year when I was in another coop gallery in San Rafael. Thanks for your comments Barb.

Know that you will love that studio when you get in there! My patient, dear husband lets me destroy the house. Usually painting in the dinning room.:(

I kind of scumbled some darks over the rocks and left the right side pretty loose to draw the eye up the river and away from the trees and mountain peaks. I also covered part of the highest peak with some of the clouds to de-emphasize it. If you want to paint better from photos, take a look at www.ImproveMyPaintings.com; this is Johannes Vloothuis' website for online instruction. He did an online workshop for WetCanvas this last Winter called "Painting stunning landscapes from photographs". If you are a NorthLight VIP member, you can stream the first two lessons for free, but it is only $10 for the first two lessons (about 5 hours). The whole course is 24 lessons--a real tour de force, but it is terrific; he is also giving a 6 week (2.5 hours each Saturday) course starting this weekend on painting trees; I'm going to take it; a lot of my looseness in my competition painting is the result of what I have learned from him. Gourlay on October 14, 2011 at 3:28: Deb, I was going to have my wife snap a current photo, but I just got a black eye after I tipped over my ladder while finishing up the ceiling sheet rock in the art studio I am building under my house, so I'll have to look around for some old photos or wait a week or so till the black and blue fades. Comment by deb hill on October 14, 2011 at 3:27: I did look at your competition painting, and like the brush work. I did feel as though I was missing something on the right side. It could possibly be the photo though. I have had a big struggle getting my photos to look right. I do like critiquing my stuff on the computer though. I see things on there that don't seem to show up just looking at the canvas. Are you pleased with what you did for the 2nd workshop? I am my own worse critic!

Comment by deb hill on October 14, 2011 at 3:19: With years of china painting, I am too tight in my paintings very often. Fighting the realism and loving the impressionism. That is one of many areas in which Richard imspires me. Actually have an abstract that I actually like, but have not posted it yet. I usually hate the abstracts that I have attempted. Looking forward to seeing more of your work and don't forget to put a profile pic of yourself on there. Used to just view the pages that had pics.

If you look at my current work shop submission, you can see it's looser, but my cityscapes tend to be pretty tight. I'll post several of my better plain air painting air paintings in the next few days; they are a work still in progress. Stu
