Dor, I redid this in a vertical format, but I'm still not sure that it's done. It's been very hard for me to get the pink bad yellow in the sky just right. I will post what I have on my 20" by 16" vertical format tomorrow. Maybe you or someone else here can help me make it stronger. Stu

Interesting conversation between Li and you......she is so observant.  I am watching for your re-do!

Thanks Li.  It wasn't subconscious; I was trying to get movement into the painting of the traffic coming toward me. with the lines of lights  I really didn't notice the swirling effect in the sky until you pointed it out, but the photo reference  for the painting really caught my eye.  My problemin the painting is that I deviated too much from the pattern that caught my eye in the pink and yellow sky and made it wormy and the sky is too edgy.  This is going to require a minor repaint of part of the sky that I will do this next week.   Van Gogh was crazy and I hope I am not!  In driving across the bridge in that direction almost daily for over 30 years, I have never seen a more alive sunrise than this one that I caught in my photo.   I have taken many photos from my car of other beautiful sunrises and sunsets and have painted a few of them and intend to paint more.    Stu

Stuart, Those lights form lines, Cool ones and warm ones , Yin and Yang which keep the whole painting balanced. Van Gogh painted  obvious circles, you painted a big hidden circle. The whole painting, as you mentioned and amused, swirls in a hiden spiral. It makes the scene moving and interesting.  Why Van Gogn did those circles, I do not know. You might did it subconsciously. But it does make a painting alife.
