In contrast with the hot red rocks and vast scale of the Grand Canyon I'm drawn to paint the familiar verdant countryside near my home and couldn't resist this pristine field of lush young wheat on the gently rolling South Downs of England.

Yes me too Chris, and I suspect the selling has a lot to do with communicating the way we feel about the subject and our enthusiasm for the concept of a painting...and then all this wonderful technical stuff were practising here simply helps us express that more eloquently...

Thank you all : )  It's not rocks...obviously, duh!...but I found the principles in this workshop really helpful in tackling this soft green landscape. This downland is solid chalk beneath the vegetation and just over the horizon the land drops off suddenly into the sea in dizzying, dazzling, pure white cliffs...I only mention this because I love it and I'm happy to be acquiring these tools to help me paint it!
