6 x 10in, oil on linen
This is the second version of the first painting. I realized that I had left the horizon to low for what I was trying to achieve with this painting. The center of interest is that main bush and the grass around it. So I had left to much space above it with the gray mountain in the background. It kind of worked as a pencil sketch, but not with the color added. So I cropped the painting and repainted the background even simpler.

Thank you for your comment Stu.
I find it very interesting how people react differently to different paintings and compositions. I personally like better the one where more foreground is showing. And funnily enough one of the reasons for that is that the background mountains are a bit warmer as you are suggesting in this one. I think I might work on this one a bit still and warm up that background.

Your 3 paintings make an interesting study in how to set off your vivid colored focal point against the background of dull hills. Your painting above does this the best, in my opinion. You might lighten and warm the sky (or most distant hill) just a bit to brighten the painting. Very nice work. Stu

Thank you Pauline.
Yes its funny the pencil sketch of that composition looked good, but not at all with color. Like you said it felt unbalanced.

i like this one! i looked at your first painting and had a feeling that it would look better without the piece of sky, to my untrained eye. This one looks much more balanced. i like the coolness of the mountain ranges against that burst of colour from the tree, plus your track is leading the eye in.  nice painting sir! :-)
