I combined my individual rocks into a larger unit, put more color into the bluff, and added a wave hitting the rocks. Better? I'm learning...

I'll respond in the photo section where I put the snapshot.  You might want to copy and paste your comment below there, so others could benefit.  Right now I'm exploring my thoughts regarding "concepts".

Hi Linda, ok, let me take a close look at your photo you sent me .....will get back to you ....but first, tell me what you like about the scene that inspires you to paint it ...that is important ..what I see might be different then what you like about it.  Look at Richards' list of "concepts" and apply one of those to your photo to paint.  Begin by doing a 4 value sketches..do a few of them, rearranging the value structure, etc.  Look for a focal point and find a way to get us there. keeping in mind the concept you have chosen and how are you going to convey that in your painting.  Once you have done all that, post your thoughts, concepts, and sketches so the group and I can proceed.

Michael, if you saw the picture you would see that this painting looks NOTHING like it.  And my granddaughters are sitting on the rock and it is the Columbia River, not ocean.  I had great inspiration when I picked the picture. However...  No the rocks were not that warm.  In fact it had been raining...it sometimes rains in the Northwet!  I was covering up my muddy colors and got carried away. There is a time when a picture needs a proper burial!

I'm ready to try another one that actually looks like the picture.  So yesterday I put another picture of the same area in your inbox but maybe you didn't see it.  I'll just put it with photos so everyone can see the process. Maybe if I can get help starting it right I'll do better.  I welcome your good input!  Thank you!

Hi Linda,  you "fixed" the rocks very nicely!!!! .....now...............do you have a photo of the real scene?  ...I would like to see it because I would like to see if the cliffs were that warm? ..... you really need to scumble some cooler dark colors on those cliffs and sides of your rocks ....the photo would help to understand what you are seeing.

Yes, you are right Jess.  The wave was an "after thought" and the minute I put it on I could see what you're saying. Thank you!

one suggestion, i think the wave would really pop if you darkened the area on the left side of it a just a bit, maybe bringing the distant hills down about a half centimeter around the top of the wave?   im just learning too so , keep that in mind!
