Thank you Li for your helpful suggestions about the mid ground rocks.  I agree with you.  I didn't notice the problem until the painting was already loaded.  This was a very challenging study.  It took me a long time to figure out the foreground rocks.  Cheers. Gina

Gina, I read your comment. I appreciate your attitude very much and your effert to finish this homework. I enjoy your overall colour combination and perspectives by change the tempreture of the colour. The size of the midground roks can be more various so they will look more organic. Just for your reference. This workshop is difficult. But you did it very well!

My objective in this workshop was to paint a study in a limited 3 value range. I mixed warm and cool greys in the 2, 5, and 7 value scale.Canvass size is 15"x15". Colours used were UMBlue, Cad. Red. light, Cad. Yellow light, Yellow Ochre, Titanium White. A touch of Gamblin's Phthalo Turquoise to highlight the waves and shallow water reserving the Ultamarine Blue to emphasize the deep sea..My objective in the composition was to enter the painting at the bottom right, moving up to the beach and then moving on to the remote bay in the background, all the while pausing to observe the rocks, the beach, etc.before moving to the hills which are obscured in the distance. To do this, it was necessary to create a bridge between the middle distance and the background by softening the midrange cliffs on the right side so that they disappear into the mist. This was a very complex photo of interesting shapes. To avoid confusion a Notan study was essential to the strong contrasts in black and white. The 3 value grey study was invaluable in establishing the foreground, mid ground and background.
