"Pohutukawa" 11x15" Oil on Canvas by Richard Robinson

You gotta love summer in New Zealand. Take the grey cloak of winter off and suddenly the beaches turn into dazzling jewels. This Pohutukawa tree was a real challenge today - trying to create its gnarled form under the dappled light was a true brain bender. In the end I decided to make a larger light area on the main trunk so I could give the painting a bit more considered structure rather than little spots of confusing light everywhere.

Thanks to Susan and Simon? for the photo.
