A 7"x11" oil on paper exercise created from a montage of 2 photos in a workshop. I was trying to work from a notan sketch and focus on developing variation within value shapes and trying to define/ link the shapes. I feel like I am still struggling with this so I guess I just need to keep working at it. It seems like it would be easy to transfer a notan/ value study into a colored painting but for some reason it is not quite that easy for me.

It sounds like we share the same struggle.  One thing I should have done to help was to create a tonal value painting prior to applying color.  I should know better than thinking at this point in my learning that I could effectively determine the value-color relationship.

Kevin, I too have trouble matching color values to the grey scale ones. I live in the desert and our landscape lacks clear values, except during sunrise and sunset. So when I paint I have to intensify my values, first on a sketch to create an artistic underlying abstract design, and then the color values are easier to match. An artist friend suggested I put a value chart under my glass palette. Then I mix a color and find the closest value match. Slowly I'm getting it...sometimes! Hope this helps. Your painting has a nice design and with the right values it will stand out!

Hello joy,

Yes, there appears to only be two values which was not what I was intending. There are some other fundamental issues with it as well. Trying to work through many of the fundamentals of oil painting. This effort was from one of Michael Chesly's video workshops focused on wet on wet painting. Im finding I need to focus more of my efforts at relating color to value.
