Original oil painting by Jeri McDonald. 16x20 stretched canvas. The first beach house is done exactly as I found my photo resource and color. This one is my adaptation using a totally different palette to see how the greens would react. I used a bluer base and purple as my compliment to the greens. The other painting of Beach House 1 is mostly warm greens mixed with cad reds for the complimentary color. Also used burnt sienna and alizarin in it. I like the colors better in that one than this.

Hey thanks Candi! I love experimenting with my palette colors and change them often. For some reason most people seem to like the higher chroma colors. I happen to like both so I want to learn how to use them in different landscapes. I love Richard's palette but have not painted in it for a while. I want to find my own personal favorite so I am trying several from Richard Schmid, Kevin MacPhearson, John Houglum, and Jack White and Johannes Vloothuis. I have their colors typed up on a sheet of paper so I can quickly look at the choices. Also, I usually create a small sample of my greens first on a sheet of canvas paper as they are the trickiest.

I can't make up my mind!  Like them both a lot!  This one has a little more punch.  In the Let's Paint New Mexico group I am in, a lot of the members use really vibrant colors, and their paintings are always really outstanding.  Thinking maybe when I learn to paint well enough, I'll start trying to use bolder colors too!
