Well, my last Blue Heron sold so I thought I would try another one. Different background so other challenges. Reference photo taken in Homasassa Springs State Park. Hope you enjoy because I had a great time painting it.

First I sketched a general outline of basic shapes. Helps if you have a good photo to start with. I use a limited palette (transparents:alizarin crimson, Indian Yellow, and ultramarine blue, opaques: cad red light, cerulean blue, cad yellow med and also white) so that helps in mixing the colors I want to use. I mix my colors first as I need them and then apply to canvas ( the tree trunk does have some blending done on the canvas, though. Also, I am a fast painter when I am laying in the darks and basic shapes. Because I am using acylics, I am able to apply lighter colors quickly. I paint from dark to light and as Richard teaches the paint get thicker. Also, have fun! I do understand the "fiddle around too much" been there done that.

Did you do this in one sitting (alla prima)? If so, how did you keep these colors so clean? Otherwise, if you did this is layers, did you draw it out completely? (Sorry to ask so much, but I'm in a "fiddle around too much" rut...)
