Circles in the Sand

"Circles in the Sand". I am still experimenting with children in my work, but I start to ask myself; what is serious art? I don't want to do "cute" and "sweet". Were is the line? Should I stick to landscapes and my goats? I haven't paint still life yet ...

Nice idea of the pail and shovel thou, but I unfortunately cannot move the girl off center now as it is painted on a stretch canvas. Next time. Thank you for your help. I appreciate that. I think the problem with the blue area of the tshirt is that it makes it look transparent, as if we are seeing the water through it. I'm sure that's an easy thing to change! Her hair is a wonderful focal point.

Comment by Ann Turner on July 10, 2014 at 11:00: Over all great painting. I love children and paintings of children so what could be better to paint ? Just some food for thought; the shadow pattern on the sleeve and blue part of the shirt would be more believable if shapes were more abstract and followed the natural folds of the fabric. If you placed the subject off center maybe to the right and then paint a little pail and shovel to be add to the story with the shadow patterns tying the pail to the figure. I like the little hand drawing circles in the sand it brings me memories of my children drawing in the sand. Oh I just noticed one more thing that would help, the hand that is going back has sharp pointy shapes for nails, not good for sand play just blunt them a little and make them less noticeable. I like the strong brushwork on the sand and the softer paint on the figure. You challenged yourself and its great ! Did you have fun! Then paint what you like and like what you paint ! BE HAPPY PAINTING don't worry about what others think is serious just enjoy

I think that not being 'cute' is more about the way one presents the subject? Giving it due dignity or something? Not trying to tug the viewers heartstrings? Whenever the artist doesn't engage/dialof with the viewer or tries to direct the viewer's thoughts too much? (Bougerau's weakness?) Dangerous themes, I guess, are anything erotic/sexual, children, animals, anything the artist is passionate about (trains, cars, planes by geeks)...

This one, I feel (IMVVHO), works nicely - she's absorbed in her 'world' and you (the artist) invite us to join or contemplate that... .. good going, Aurelia!!! :)
