Oh Hyun, this is what I need to be doing!  Wonderful exercise but no way could I do it in 50 Minutes!  Smiles ;-)

Dear Betsy, Olivia, and Thomas, Thank you so much for looking at my paintings with such close attentions

and typing this valuable comments. I checked it out and  agree with you.

Maybe I'll allow me extra 10 more minutes to.. :)

Betsy, as I said to Thomas before, I believe many years pencil drawings help me "see and read ..."

Thank you so much!!

Hi, Hyun,
I am really impressed with this "challenge" you and Thomas have engaged in. I want to try it myself!

As for dark vs light: I could be wrong, but I think the appeal of most of your paintings is their light-filled high key quality. You combine light and color masterfully. In the instant case you are dealing with a still life with strong directional light, which causes a larger spread in the value range. So, what i am suggesting is that you might be comfortable working within a narrower range and you have employed that method of attack here. Now, this painting looks much better than anything I could paint in 50 minutes. I am still dreaming about the day when I have enough mastery of values to be a tonalist. But, perhaps on your next pass at this type of exercise, you push for higher contrast and more darks.
I could be wrong about all this. It's just a feeling I get when I look at this painting.
As always, I look forward to seeing more of your magnificent work!

Lovely colour and brushwork

The values of the lower parts and the cast shadows should be a little lower. The reflection from the stairs doesn't light them up that much. The rest is fine i would say. Great exercise and very interesting, thanks!

I understand. What fruit is this? It appears to be quite complex colors. The brushwork looks nice. Just the colors look arbitrary on some spots and don't seem to describe the curved shapes.
My bottle is a much easier modell than those fruit.

Thomas, I tried this after I saw your 12 minutes painting because I assumed limited time helped you get such beautiful brush works on that. After I finished I felt it helped me, it was fun.
I took picture of these fruits on the middle of the wooden stairs, so color was so simple: red fruits and raw sienna background mainly. So I tried hard to add other colors. Which colors??
I think of value first, and then I could pick any same value colors trying
to pick compl...colors or next to compl...
(When you look at the color chart, you will see all those same value but different colors)
So I picked light green ( compl... Of red fruit..) on the highlighted edge of the stair.
And dark cool color behind the red on the left.

Hyun, i think you took a very ambituous approach on this by enhancing the saturation of the colors you saw. I always have difficulties with that and first try to understand the colors of a subject by just matching them. I do not know whether it is a better approach because in the end i want to learn pushing the colors too. Probably both ways are useful and i should try this too.
