Wow! You have a wonderful memory. That rough surf is perfection. I have trouble painting that...the calm coast is not so difficult. I checked out photos of Sisters, OR. It is also gorgeous. You will have great painting opportunities there. I still love looking at that wild wave of yours. Terrific!

Thanks Sharon and Nancy.
No Nancy I didn't use a photo of the Oregon coast (or any photo for that matter) although I am very familiar with the Oregon coast... southern Oregon in particular. We had a summer home in Brookings Oregon for a number of years. We sold that home about five years ago and bought a home in Sisters Oregon instead... Brookings was just too far away from anything -ha!

Wow! This is spectacular, Randall. Did you use a photo of the Oregon coast? The translucent light in the wave glows.

Thank you so much Jessica, Carolyn, Ann and Jim

Think I'm going to have to do another two color study tonight, it's a really good exercise :)

Love the energy of your painting with the mighty crashing wave. The transition of color on the wave splash is very nice

Thank you everyone. I am soooo bad about responding to comments... it's not that they're not appreciated it's just that I'm bad about that... I'm trying to get better (maybe some therapy is in order-Ha!). In any case, thanks. I've spent quite a few hours over the years studying the ocean and trying to capture it in oils. I have found that as long as you have a basic knowledge of the anatomy of waves, foam patterns, water flow, etc., the ocean is really a liberating subject to paint; after all who's to say that the wave, foam, etc. didn't look like that (as long as it follows the basic rules). So, because of painting it many times doing a scene from memory/imagination is not as difficult as if I had not spent all the previous hours.

What was the challenge for me was to use a very limited palette, using only two complimentary colors. However, it's precisely these kind of exercises that I need to do more often... get out of my comfort zone. I love this site and look forward to participating in more of these in the future.
