hi dor..if you have a local lumber yard type of business near you...go buy one sheet of untempered masonite...it will cost around 20.00.  have them cut it up into what ever sizes you want.  the first one i asked for all 6x6 pieces and there were a slew of them!!!!  the next one i asked for some 11x14 and some 8x10...again lots of panels!...then coat them with 2 or 3 coats of gesso - to add more texture, you can throw in some texture paste or powdered pumice - brush this on...you end up with a whole lot of inexpensive panels to practice on! i use 1/2 inch but if you do small you can certainly get away with 1/4 inch.  i tried to get them to cut a piece at lowes and menards and they looked at me as if i'd lost my mind.  fortunately we have a family owned business here and they were most obliging!!  good luck!!  i was telling li that the most important thing you can do is just paint!!  even though i've been painting off and on for more than thirty years and drawing most of my life, i started a daily painting blog in 2009..and i really tried to do one small painting every day.  when i look at my work now as opposed to when i started this mission..i can definitely see improvement. check it out and see if you don't agree with me (www.susiegregory.blogspot.com)...paint often and paint from life whenever you can! - i started with one pear ..i found stuff outside, lots of food items, nicknacks, leaves, ..sometimes i work from photographs, especially with this "grand" project of mine where i'm trying to do a small painting of all my friends' grandchildren...but when i started my daily painting thing...it was all from life!!  so just do it!!! and good luck!!

Dorian, alway be ready to hel, but  I am new and limited in knowledge of painting. Would you like to ask some other painters opinion too before you change this one? among them, Stuart, Dirk, Susie, Nancy, Dee, Jane... they all will be ready to help, please let them know you want their opinion. Good luck!!!

You are so helpful Li Ningning, thank you. Seems as if I am improving......smiles. All of this practice I surely need.  It was easier to paint on this canvas board.   I had been using the canvas paper! I also learn how to use my phone camera : ))  A long time ago (knowing I would paint someday)  I purchsed several dozen 16x20 stretched canvases.  Sure wish I could return them and get smaller ones, but I did not know better! What I think I will do with this one is add leaves and such on the right. I need to practice painting leaves......smiles to you.....you are such a sweet heart.............dor:))

Dorian, I like it , good clean and nice colour. I like the gradural transition of colour of your background. you made the table colour very interesting by subtle cool and warm colour differences. The mouth of  the pitcher can turn to point to the right so that  it  can take care of the big empty space  there. I know it is difficult to change. If I were you I may cut this canvas to 2piece. The gigger  left side is your finished painting. Right side I would paint another painting.  I do not know canvas board. Can it be cut?  Anway apart from the composition, it is a very nice and beautiful painting.

I agree with you Nancy and would have done so, but I already submitted it and it was too late to resubmit!  Thanks for looking and commenting Nancy

I like the contrasting blue on the cloth. Really lovely and delicate way to handle the cloth. :-)

Lovely painting, Dor. I think I would have brought those leaves down further onto the cloth on the right. It might bring the eye into the composition and around.
