Hyun, Olivia, I just try to follow Barry Raybould's instructions at VAA "do small studies not finished paintings". Well it is the credo of all great masters and teachers. It was a bit weird at the beginning to work against the desire we all have to produce something nice and finished. I am happy to hear that you see a progress... as a student midst of working it often hard to see that i am getting somewhere with my efforts.
It feels great to get encouragement from great painters like you, thanks a lot!

Amazing. Impressive .I see now why my progress is so  slow. Im much too  laid back and I thought I was pretty diligent.

I see....and I understand how the painter felt.
Your studious approach as a painter is inspiring!

Hyun, think the progress depends less on the number of years but more on the number of studies one has done (given that those studies are done in some reasonable manner, e.g. Following the vaa assignments). Last week i had a discussion with a painter stopping by when i worked a street scene. She said she has painted almost every day for more than ten years and was puzzled of my progress 2 years. It came out that, because i work small and don't do much rework, i have done twice her number of paintings/studies already.

Thomas, I already learn this from your web site. Only two years.... Impressed!

Hyun, i worked as a physicist until two years ago. I've been to the moon too often. Just become a useful painter and person and be more happy once in a while ... That would be something.
You have to try this and will be amazed!

It still doesn't make big difference. Amazing!
I think in this way, you would probably fly to the moon in another 2-3 years.

Hyun, thanks. Like i wrote i cheated on two. I actually started out with a 20 stroke limit but found that i couldn't hold that for the more complex ones and increased the limit to 25. For the last two i couldn't even keep the 25. (Bottom middle and left: 32 and 30). Like i wrote, i stayed within 25 strokes only on average.

Only 25 strokes??.... Wow!!! Wonderful exercise!
I wonder how you were able to finish the bottom middle one within 25 strokes.
