Hi Elizabeth, I do not do anything technical to the leaf. I pick ones that have fallen from the tree and are not quite dry, but more dry than green. I give them a clean and sit them inside a book so when they do dry out completely, they dry flat. I usually do a wet background wash with oil paint mixed with linseed oil. The I just paint the scene. Before I start painting, I usually trace the shape of the leaf onto paper so I can sketch a tonal/composition study of the scene. This helps when I start to paint.

I would love to see if framed. OH, ha ha.........I am near trees where the leaves are the size of large plates about 10 inches across. I thought of you wishing you had bigger leaves. I'm not up on trees, but i would guess sometype of oak? Ro

Thanks Ro. This is one of the commissioned paintings. I'm framing it up tomorrow, then it's ready for its new home.
