Garrapata Workshop24

12 x 12 Oil on canvas My second oil. I found it very difficult to mix the colors I wanted but I believe my problem is the quality of my water soluble oils by Artisan. My grays weren't gray enough and my bright weren't bright enough. Still learning to paint with oils. Made a lot of mud at times as I would go back into areas and mix layers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Comment by Linda L. Kano on August 14, 2013 at 14:47: Sharon, I like these rocks and the deep blue water. I use Hoblein and they have Indian Yellow which is transparent. These water soluable oils are heavy paints but they thin well with walnut oil. A big challenge to keep from making mud is when I mix greens. The secret is to have the right color the first try and not cover it up with another color unless it is a light touch. I tried acrylic and found it much easier because I could just cover a bad color with another one and no mud! But I'm determined to stick with these water soluable oils and learn how to mix colors well.

I wish I had been able to make my lighter gray rocks more on the warm side than the cooler color I mixed. One of my favorite colors in acrylics is transparent Indian Yellow, great for tinting. Yellow ochre just didn't seem to give me the gray I desired.

Thanks Ann, I tried to use Richard's colors. Maybe some of that softening came when the painting jumped off my easel into my lap the other night. LOL

I am struggling with the overexposed foreground sandy formation, which is overexposed on the photo and I do not know how best to render it... You managed wonderfully. As to the WSO, you may want to try Holbein. I started with Windsor and Newton, but switched after a couple of weeks. They work much, much better for me.
