Green Apple and Friends

8x10 oil on panel...i wanted to give this workshop one more shot. used a different white vessel, added a green apple and a cutie (small nectarine) and some left-over lime slices. i was really trying to use more paint, put down a stroke and leave it...(so hard for me)..i managed it in some places but then i'd find myself noodling a bit...ah well...

I really like seeing the strokes in this painting. The reflection of the green apple looks great. I see what you are talking about with the elipse being off, but somehow, it doesn't take away from the beauty of this.

Comment by susie gregory on March 26, 2012 at 2:43: li - that's what this is all about...i bounce around so much - when i see something or some method i'd like to try i just do it...often with no success..but the more we paint the better we get...i will be 67 in july and have been drawing and painting most of my life...and i still have so far to go!!!...but isn't this a fun ride to be on????

Comment by Ningning Li on March 25, 2012 at 8:37: Susie, Very good try of limited strokes. I failed to do it as I do not know how to do it on my yellow green vase. As the vase is not a stroke a value I had to compromize by not doing it on my oranges. Sank into my own way of painting.

Next one will learn from you, no matter how ever just try it, or I will never be able to learn the new tricks.

Comment by susie gregory on March 25, 2012 at 2:46: i noticed richard uses a synthetic brush a lot - i have a lot of bristle brushes - good for landscape work - but for figurative and some stilllife i think you need a bit more control - i still am trying not to overwork..richard schmidt says to go very slowly - get the first color right and then relate everything to that going forward. easier said than done, in my opinion! - the most important thing for me is to try and use more paint. i'm such a hoarder...it's really an effort to put out a lot of paint because i hate to waste anything...it leads me sometimes to slop paint around a the end just to use it up and perhaps it's not the right color or temperature. i know i've come a long way but i have so much farther to go!!!..plus i'm sure my camera doesn't show the juiciness of my paintings .. don't quite know what to do about that!....btw - looking at this just now, i've noticed i don't have the elipsis on the top of the vessel right - i wanted to get one more try in and probably rushed....at least i can look at it and know it's wrong...so that's a good thing!!
