Challenge 59. I really loved painting this pic of the seagull Richard chose to paint for his workshop. I had such fun painting it. 10 x 12" oil on canvas board.

Hi Glenys, could it be you forgot to tag your beautiful paintings with workshop59?

many thanks Jon, Mario and Robin.   I love anything with water and reflections, they are such a challenge and a struggle. I will never get them true, but aim instead for atmosphere and balance.  Good point re my watercolours Jon.  I liken watercolour being on the stage (get it right first go) and oils with films (you can re-take and re-take). Glad you picked up that tip Robin, now you will know what to do <^-^> (smile)

Appreciate your tips Glenys - especially looking twice and putting down once confidently! I find that so difficult after years of puddling! Thank you x

This is a beautiful painting. I really like the colours and values you have chosen; lovely contrasts and harmonies. The feathers have come out really well. I think the slightly blurred effect and dazzling light reflections really enhance the overall effect. This is a painting I would very much like to have hanging on my wall! And thanks for the tips on your brushwork.

Thanks, Glenys - good tips. Maybe your watercolors also helped you be decisive!

thank you so much everyone for all of your complements.

well Jon, I could probably write a page on your question, however to keep it short, I'm trying to follow Richard's techniques as much as possible. I start with the darkest, then mid tones and finally the lightest tones. a few tips I've learnt here, be confident, it makes for stronger impact, put enough pigment on your brush, I try to keep my strokes fluid, ie, try not to dab dab .  do it in one stroke if possible, so look twice at your subject, and put down  once. I don't know if that helps at all but if you watch how Richard does his, he's one of the best I've found to follow.
