This is from a photograph. I would like to start painting plein air it is a goal I have for this year.

I use a reddish brown, quinacridone orange or transparent red oxide with a little ultramarine blue.

Do you use dark brown or dark blue for the underpainting?

Thanks Timothy, I think of warm and cool. I use a fairly dark transparent underpainting on the trees and rocks and then place my lighter opaque colours overtop as simply as I can. I use acrylics and I like the fast drying time for glazing and scumbling etc.

If I could double-like this I would, for the texture of the bark alone. The composition is very interesting and there's a liveliness to the way the scene is composed. Everything looks so smooth
