Thanks SO much for you very nice comments.  I have to be honest - I am a geologist and the rock was the most important part of the picture for me.  I left the seagull in so other people would not keep asking me what it was a picture of  :)  I do like birds a lot too, but I like rocks more.  I did this one from a photo I took when we were on holidays there.  I printed it out on paper and then I used the grid method to transfer the whole design.  I find I can't get the proportions right unless I do that.  It is just a big grid with each square about 10 cm x 10cm but it works for me.  I have also put my picture up against a window and then traced the main shapes using the light coming through, but then it has to be the same size as the painting you want to paint.  Thanks again for the nice comments.

This is really nice.  I like painting birds too.  Its hard to get it right, don't you agree?  Did you freehand draw this?  I find my bird shapes are often wrong (im such a bad drawer) and sometimes I resort to tracing onto my canvas.  UG!  practice, practice practice, I guess is true.  You've done a good job here, and I especially like your rocks, they look so real (i've been to NFLD and that's excatly what they look like)  :)
