I think you do get better colour on clouded days because the bright sun washes out many colours. If you look at form studies, you will notice the brightest accurate (local colour) is where it is not in the shade or in the sun but in the half tone. Look at portrait paintings. Artists put the most saturated colour just before the shaded part. But on the other hand, paintings painted on cloudy days, I find their design not always so good, because shade forms make good patterns. I do like Richard Schmids paintings and have his book and DVD's as well. But for me, his most beautiful landscapes, is painted in sunshine. It might be my preference. For me, design is just as important if not more. I am currently study the work of Eric Bowman. His design and brushwork is awesome especially in his figure/portrait paintings. I think there is a very few artists that really paint the colours they see and those that do, their paintings look a bit boring! Nothing wrong with your colours and brushwork. I think you are a good artist!
