I think you do get better colour on clouded days because the bright sun washes out many colours.  If you look at form studies, you will notice the brightest accurate (local colour) is where it is not in the shade or in the sun but in the half tone.  Look at portrait paintings.  Artists put the most saturated colour just before the shaded part.  But on the other hand, paintings painted on cloudy days, I find their design not always so good, because shade forms make good patterns.  I do like Richard Schmids paintings and have his book and DVD's as well.  But for me, his most beautiful landscapes, is painted in sunshine.   It might be my preference.  For me, design is just as important if not more.  I am currently study the work of Eric Bowman.  His design and brushwork is awesome especially in his figure/portrait paintings.  He uses strong light to make strong compositions.  http://ericbowman.com/

You mention a very interesting and important point.... I argee partially. I just finished Richard Schmid's Alla Prima painting. If i understand him right he just copies the colors he sees and stresses the importance of not guessing colors. He prefers cloud covered days for their stable light conditions and the possibility to see colors more accurately. Possibly the observation skills can be trained into a direction where those fantasic color combinations in a master painting are actually seen and barely invented. I am not sure.
I do notice a change in my color vision but it is very slow.
Thanks Aurelia, i find you are are a good artist too!

I think there is a very few artists that really paint the colours they see and those that do, their paintings look a bit boring!  Nothing wrong with your colours and brushwork.  I think you are a good artist!

Thank you Aurelia! At the moment it's a struggle out there....with colour in particular. Other than in the studio I hardly ever have the feeling to really paint the colors i see. I hope it's true that the hours spent outside are well invested. Often it doesn't feel like... Glad you like it!

Lovely painting Thomas.  Your colour is very good and I like the crop version of the barn.
