Oranges & Tea Cup with Blue Leaves

I re painted bit of this later got rid of the blue bit at the back put more shadow under the floating half orange left. But this photo reproduces better so left it. Might be something in that?

Comment by Justine Wardle on March 21, 2012 at 23:58: Richard I had another look I understand now the reflected light value on the underside of the actual oranges is to high and thats why the shadows on the cloth are in conflict with the orange forms. Takes a while for things to sink in.

Canvass surface in oil paints Art Spectrum & Permalba. Also meant to add the forms in the cloth not that good as I wasn't watching the direction the cloth was going which probably added to the confusion in value. Richard I hadn't thought of bring in another element to fill a void re the teaspoon, clever. My answer was that weird blue thing I painted out. Thankyou everyone for your wonderful comments.

I had a discussion with Stu and the general concensus was there was a problem with the shadows under the oranges. I can see that quite clearly in the black and white photo. I hadn't even thought about reflected light in the shadows on the cloth so possibly I was sedued by that cadium orange and didn't as you say squint. My brain and eye is still trying to get acustomed to the idea of values in colour. I need to get back to those basic lessons in your mastering colour DVDs. After following your demo and seeing your newer painting I realised I went way to hard on the orange on the cup and need to soften the edges to make it more unified as Annie has done in her jug. I can see in other peoples work the importance of lost edges but havent really worked out how to do it. As you say if I had gotten the values correct under the oranges the lost edges may of been easier to achieve.
