I'm sure that these are not to code. I wasn't able to simplify and break these down into light side and shadow side. The blue was distracting and all the green difficult to work with. So I tried another and I still wasn't able to do it. 8"X10" Oil on Linen board.

Thanks Dee, those are good ideas. I was able to work a little more methodically by the end of this week. I still find it hard to keep the light and shadows as separate areas, it's easier when the light isn't changing on me as I paint as in still life set ups. I think I'm finally getting better with seeing values though and keeping them in the correct range.

Hi Denise! Looking at your resource photo there is clearly light and shadow despite the general evenness in values across the scene, so I wonder if you could play more with bending the colour temperature and saturation to create the contrast you're after...
