Hi John, great painting! Love the composition and the totally organic cloud shapes. The only thing I want to bring to your attention is the value of the oranges in the 'silver lining' of your clouds. All that rim lighting should be lighter than the shadow side of the cloud. If you view it in grayscale (see my picture) you can see some of the orange lights are darker than the shadow. Other than that I love it.

Thanks, Nancy!

Love the cool and firey hot contrast in your sky Jon. By the way, I think most of us hit that ugly place in our painting process. You are right to keep pushing by it. You never know how it will turn out. Glad you kept at it.

Hi, Nita - you can see the colors in the sail, but I think they should be less saturated - you're right - and more of a silhouette effect would probably look better - thanks! Jon

The simplicity of your clouds is very effective. I've been looking at beach sunset pictures in picasa and most boats in the water show up as silhouettes. I love the colourful sail be would we be able to see those colours in such low light? Because I don't get to the ocean very often I'm not sure.

Hi, Rita! Thank you very much. These two paintings of sunsets were those sort of paintings where I got to a point where it was all going wrong, but I kept going, and they surprised me somewhat - come to think of it, most of my efforts seem to go through a "bad" stage (most of 'em don't recover from it either!) -
