Thank you all for your wonderful comments!  I just have to tell you I learned a Huge lesson regarding this.  I should have used linen canvas instead of the cotton....it was difficult to get smooth lines because the canvas was so rough.  NEVER again will I do a portrait on cotton duck canvas!   For the skin tones I used Golden Orchre, Vermillion Red, Viridian, and Tit White.   The mixing was also a lesson learned....in the past I never felt comfortable with the colors I used, then I saw on YouTube an artist (who was wonderful, but his name escapes me) that used these colors....it worked out perfectly for all 4 of the people!

WOW!! Susan this is just PERFECT!!!  I love the it how all the colours fit together, it is very harmonious , the hair looks so shiny,...and your skintcolours BEAUTIFUL!!! Absolute AWESOME!!! Like Stuart I first thought it was a photo, this family must be very happy with such a great, stunnig painting.

I just started a portrait painting course, beginning with only some eyes, then some noses till after six weeks our first portrait. If mine turns out half as good as yours, I would be very happy.  I than would be able to restore the only portrait I ever have painted and that was botched up by my "art teacher". She never told people how to work, no she just shove you aside and start painting. The skincolours she used to overpaint mine, were to dark and blue, the portrait didn't resembled my partner at all anymore, and I was very hurt by her action. I quit the group, tried a second one after moving house, again someone who starts painting by herself when something doesn't seems to be right. Hopefully I'll find the right teacher in the future who just tells how the adjust, revised or change something till then I'll join some onlinegroups.

wow

for the people and a lovely backdrop to give a casualness about the family. They must love it.

Susan, at first I thought it was a photo in the thumbnail and I wondered why it was here, so I looked at it full size...amazing!!
