oil on 8x10" canvas board
There was so much in the background of my photo, that I had to completely change it. Hope it makes sense. :-)

Richard, Thank you so very much for your encouraging comment. I loved that this assignment made me go out and prowl around the docks in Morro Bay. I wish I could get up the courage to get out and plein aire paint as you do so often.
Li, I know. I feel so fortunate living in such a beautiful seaside town. The whole coast of California is incredibly spectacular. I will be looking forward to seeing your foggy water with boats painting. I know they will be fabulous as is all of your work.
Great work Nancy.
Nancy, you are so lucky live near the water. If I were you I would paint a lot about this water(river or ocean? anyway). And you will be very skillfull to this subject. They will be beautiful paintings. I just came back from a 2hour trip to take photo of a fishing port. Many, many boats but sun disappeared. I will try to paint foggy water with boats. Smilings as Dorian always says.
Thank you so much Ningning. I always appreciate your kind comments. Because I live so close to the water and the fishing boats that are docked there, I decided to paint my own boat using Richard's techniques. I am so glad you like it.
Wow, Nancy, This is Great!!! I love it, the light, the value , the shapes, the colour, you name it. Excellent Job!!!
Hi Sharon, Thank you for your observations and your encouraging comments. That boat on the right is a bit confusing, I agree. There was so little of it to paint, and all of it was in deep shadow. I kind of guessed what it was I was seeing in the photo. Thanks again.
Britt, Thank you. Actually, I used some of the photo (the dock) and made up the rest. It was Richard's suggestions about changing backgrounds that made me think of it. I have always needed to paint exactly what I saw, but this workshop has helped with that. It has given me permission to change what I see. Keep at it, and you will be able to do lots of things you didn't think you could. :-)
Nancy, I think you did a great job with the background! My greatest weakness is not being able to "make things up" if they are too complicated or don't look right in my reference. I guess that comes with time.
Like this painting, the red boat is rendered nicely, the one on the right, though is confusing somewhat, not much. I understand the background! Water reflections very good and like the broken color in the water.
