Acrylics. The first in a triptych worked around a verse from the Holy Bible, Ezra 7:10, which speaks of seeking the Way of the Lord, doing it, and teaching it. The river links the triptych together. This painting illustrates the seeking aspect - digging for treasure, preparing the soil of one's soul, and thirsting for more. The people in and around the river show how people are at different stages of their journey and at different depths in the Way of the Lord. The landscape includes locations around Rotorua. The 'treasure map' is of the same area. The quote on the map is in Maori and is about the tribe that is indigenous to this area. The people depicted include Maori and Pakeha (white/non-Maori), both modern and historic. For this sort of picture, I usually work from photos. I play around with the photos like a mosaic, enlarging or reducing and cutting out until I have a version on paper or computer of what I can see in my head, and then I blend them together in the painting.
