Hmm, I still feel that it's fine - just needs more contrast and more violet in the shaded part
... white walls in shade and sun? ... it's a very interesting issue/challenge! Bon courage!
Jon, thanks a lot for your comments & suggestions. There is really something about this that I can't get right! I have scraped off the paint on the walls & ground in the shaded part a number of times already. Maybe if I put the wall & some of the path opposite the chairs into sunlight it will help make a more pleasing composition. After all, only I know there was a huge bougainvillea arbour over the whole area and that there are stairs at the end of that shaded path :)
I am trying to figure out how to paint white walls in sun & in shadow & finding it very difficult - have been looking at old masters paintings & reading about it, but (obviously!) will have to keep working on it!
I think you need far more light/dark contrast to get the concept (warm lit area seen through a tuneel of shade?) to work, Jessica -
althougt with the darks graduated from very dark (maybe at the sides, under the chairs) to 'lighter' (e.g. on the path) - I would think that pushing purple tones in the dark areas and warming much more the lights would get more pop
