Thanks Ruby (my new friend).
very professional!!. Wonderful work on the people also the crowds in the distance. Beautiful colour pallet
Thanks Sharon. I believe you are right about the sky, thank you.
This is great, nice realistic figures. Love it! sky is a little dark, though.
First of all, thanks for your nice comments everybody. I really do believe that artists are some of the nicest people you could hope to find.
Richard asked us to comment on each others' paintings and add suggestions for improvement where we can. Personally I find that a little difficult when I'm not sure what style a person is trying to achieve, e.g. they may want to paint in the style of Monet - or Gauguin. They may prefer photo-realism - or abstract, etc.
In this instance I know what style I was trying to achieve, which is a representational image in a realist/impressionist style. So if you'll allow me I will now proceed to critique my own work.
One of the opportunities offered was to work with the Glowing Light effect. I think I have done that to a degree, but I didn't want it too overpowering as to detract from the subject of the picture which, for me, is the street and the human activity.
Pros: I am reasonably happy with the composition, the scale and perspective. I am quite happy with the colours and lighting. While not super bright there is still the impression of fairly strong sunlight and shade. And while it is not finely detailed I think the level of detail is suitable for the purpose and there is enough going on to keep you looking. I also quite like the eye movement through the image. From the two ladies in the foreground, to the couple standing at the shopfront, to the girl in the distance with the red top, then up to the skyline to explore the buildings, which brings you back down to the front again.
Cons: There are several clumsy features which I might have improved if I had invested more time: the arms of the lady in blue at the front, the can of flowers and the lighting and shadow around it, the person standing inside the shop on the right, and the upstairs window with the open shutters. I could also have tidied up some of the brushwork which in parts is - I would like to be able to say "loose" but is actually "rough".
That's about it. If you got this far, thanks for reading. I'm happy to hear any other suggestions you may have.
Thanks Fay. Goodness me, another one from Tauranga. We keep popping up all over the place!
A lovely painting Lawrence - your portrayal of the street and people is superb....from Tauranga!
Love the colors, and values and movement.
Thanks Dan, I'm impressed with what I've seen of your work too.
