Adriana, I think this painting is exceptional and I hope the sculptor gets to see his face on this site.  He is so alive and his eyes are remarkable -- I know I could just pull on his nose and plant my fingers in his beard. It is a joy to view.

Thank you Silvana! When I saw his photo on Facebook(he and my boyfriend were high school classmates) I said "oh wow..who's that..I have to paint him!" He reminded me of someone from Lord of the Rings.

What an incredible expression! William can really talk with his eyes, and you could show that in your painting. Those eyes are full of life!

Thanks Catherine!  Depending on each individual skin tone.. I usually have  a palette of Titanium white,Cadmium Red(or a similar red like Grumbacher Red or Pyrrole Red Lt),Cadmium Yellow,Yellow Ochre,Raw Sienna,Terra Rosa(or Trans Oxide Red or Burnt Sienna or Venetian Red) and then a tiny touch of Ultramarine or a Veridian. For William,since he has more of a ruddy complexion I went with the Venetian  Red,Tit White,Yellow Ochre...but  start adding small bits to the white .that way you can gauge how much color..it won't be too overwhelming. Choose your white,then a yellow,a red...the fairer skin tones=the cadmiums..the ruddier=the Venetian/Terra Rosa types. Check out "Oil Paintinig Secrets From A Master" by Linda Cateura..it's about David Leffel's palette and techniques.Also  it's fun to check out some of the old master palette's online..like Fechin or Rembrandt or Velazquez..just type in so and so's palette and you'll see what the masters used..even the new masters like Richard Schmid...etc. Ooh  a good book for mixing color.."Color Mixing Recipes for Portraits" by William F. Powell.Hope this helps.

Very nice. I love the detail in the features ... You are very talented. I am painting my son at the beach. i have never painted people before so im not sure what colors to use for skin tone. Any suggestions as to what colors to use??
