Oils, 8x8", "oil out" your canvas "where you plan on painting that day" by rubbing a light coat of linseed oil on the canvas and wait 2 minutes before you wipe it off with cheese cloth. Next you paint over the entire canvas with 5-6 values of gray making it look like a black & white photo getting all your values correct. This is the Gray or doodvert layer, also called the dead layer - no color. Let completely dry.
