Thank you so much Nancy! I do struggle with getting enough contrast.. my values end up looking all the same. Will be working on this in the next workshop.. do you think it'll be another still life?? :)

You are very talented, Rose. I too can't believe you are a beginner. Li's comment was what I was going to suggest. If you look at your set up photo, the background light really adds drama. Contrast is really important. Overall...lovely painting.

Great idea, Li!! I will give that a try.. you're right.. would make it stand out more :) I appreciate your thoughts! :)

Rose, would you like to take a risk to put the light part of background lighter(maybe 1 to 2 value lighter)? I guess this simple change may make it more interesting in terms of value.

I can't wait, Dee... only a few more days and we can begin again! If only there was more time in each day! Hugs!

You're welcome Rose. I love oils and think you'll enjoy them too. They're beautiful and versatile...and very forgiving! I only had time to do two and wish I could do more. See you on the next one... : )

Dee, thank you so much for your suggestions! Yes, I had two light sources which truly made it difficult to get good shadows and contrasts. I truly appreciate your thoughts on this one and can't wait for the next workshop. I wish I had more time this month and I would have taken a turn at a third one, but busy with the kids. You're sweet to comment on my painting. Being totally new to oil painting, I really had a wonderful time learning about values and how to place the paint on the canvas. This is way different than watercolor or oil pastel! Thank you again, and have a great day! :)

Good job, Rose. Looks like you maybe had two light sources, one from the front on the left and another from behind on the right....? I'd find this tricky to paint as they tend to cancel each other out and you lose the highlights and deeper shadows. That said, I love the whole right hand side: the duck egg blue background with the warm reds and soft pale neutrals; the back light coming through those grapes on the right is a delight, as is the silhouette of the jug with its lost and defined edges and its intriguing reflections...of a window? Next time I'd try setting up with just one good light source if you can, from whichever direction you like!

Jane, thank you so much for your kind compliment! I have read so many art books over the years but never got round to actually creating any art.. until now. And I'm having a ball. I'm glad my children are almost grown because I can't wait to get into this full-time. I appreciate such a high compliment coming from an accomplished artist like you :)) Bless you!
