nice job with your glazing! Mine was so pathetic I could not even bring myself to post it.
Thank you Nancy, turneresque wow! thats an honour!
Lovely, Pauline. This is quite a step after seeing the grisaille. The strength of the piece really lies in your solid composition. It was destined to be good from the start. Beautifully done. I look forward to seeing more of these.
Thank you Stu, Jane, Roena and Silvana very much for giving me your constructive comments and also for liking what i'm trying to portray here, you have all been very helpful and supportive. I am working on my other painting so i shall certainly be taking all you've said on board. This painting was quite difficult to photograph the camera has picked up the light/yellow here quite significantly. I will try to get a better picture and post and also make some changes to this one...thank you again and good luck with the workshop :-))
To take up Roena's point regarding the left hand buildings, are you showing reflected light from the buildings opposite?
I just love to read all the comments on glazing and to see the results. I haven't watched the videos yet... it's like a great mistery to me... I hope to get the courage to watch and paint! It seems quite difficult!
This one is a wonderful sunset Pauline!
In my Flemish training they said you can never get the white back if you put your gray layer to dark, so yes for your feeling that you should have kept the gray layer a little lighter since the glazes darken. I understand that you want to enter a larger version in a Bristol competition. One thing I noticed here is that the building on the left, which to me would be in shadow bc the sun is on the other side of the building...the shadow on that building appears to be as or almost as bright as the sunlit side of the buildings on the right. Surrounded by trees I dont understand the reflected light you are showing on the building on the left especially the side facing the viewer which I would assume was in the shadow similar to the buildings shadow side of the buildings on the right.
Other than that, I think you did a wonderful job of portraying the last rays of light hitting things in the scene.
Very interesting. The tone of the underpainting makes a huge difference to the final colours. Glad you will try more I like the layered process, it seems to add more and more depth the painting every time you add a layer. As Stu noted the colours can get distorted during the photographic process so we are not necessarily seeing it as you are. Good job though. I will not be glazing mine for a week yet as I will be away, but I am looking forward to it.
