To establish a solid foundation of painting skills and develop confidence as an artist. I am a beginner and it is a wonderful hobby right now but hope to improve through study, practice, reading and more practice.

I think in addition to the rusty weathering color there would also be some blue areas where the smooth surface of the rock would reflect the color of the sky and ocean. I seem to recall that occurring. That was also captured a bit in that painting of the grouping of black rocks.
Now, I promise to put this subject to bed and stop harping on about it. It just got me intrigued and at some time this issue may come up for me too, so I wanted to check into it. :)

I went through my info on painting rocks and while this isn't exactly what you are looking for this might help. It is a video by Wilson Bickford.  If you google search him he has lots of short videos on different subjects and I have enjoyed watching them.  I couldn't figure out how to put in the link but here is the address for the rocks one.
