I have seen this in the store and it looked wonderful and I intend to try it out. My Indian Pots is on gallery wrapped linen (which I considered the best product), however it took me 3 days all day long working on the gesso and sanding each layer. Each layer must be dry or you can not wet sand!
If you use the onion and then oil out.........oil out ONLY the area you will be working on that day, then turn the painting against the wall to dry so airborne thingies dont collect to the canvas. I had so much trouble with gunk getting on the canvas for the Indian Pots that I no longer oil out. I later learned that you really only need the onion if the paint was really dry for long periods of time.

I do like Delmus's recipe for prepared black to make your grays, but I switched (and so did he) to using Linseed oil and Liquin to aid the paint to dry.  Start out with about 50/50 for the gray layer, and switch to 60/40 LOil/Liquin for the first color layer, and then more oil for any more layers. (Fat over lean rule).

If you have any questions at all, or want me to "check" how you are doing on each layer, just ask as I am always willing to help someone learn the process. The layers just walk you through the painting and make it actually very easy.  You can post your pic on my page on the comment wall and I will comment, or post in the gallery and tell me you did so I will know to go look.  Ro

Hi Roy, Thank you so much for your kind comments on my Indian Pots painting.  I showed the work in progress for the layers in my gallery if you have not seen it you might take a look at the steps, and also, Sydney's Magnolia I showed the steps.  I know 2 really good sites to go look at and read - read - read as lots of information can be gathered from them.  One is http://artpapa.net/content/view/29/52/ and the other is Delmus Phelps at

http://www.easy-oil-painting-techniques.org/ .  Both sites give free lessons so look for those tabs.

Looking at the directions they look a little scary at first, but after you do just one you will be a pro almost.  There is only 4 layers although you can work on each layer more than one sitting.  The imprimatura is toning the canvas, the Bt Umber layer to help establish your darks (also aids in future layers to dry), the doodvert (dead-gray) layer and then you start the color layer.  All is kept thin, and very smooth, so the canvas needs to be prepared compeltely smooth.  OR you can purchase http://www.dickblick.com/products/ampersand-claybord/  which is a pannel with a smooth finish.

Hi, I just thought I would pop over and give you a big welcome to the site. I have made so many friends here. I hope you will find new friends and encouragement too. // As a jump start for you, the paintings are under the tab PHOTOS. I encourage you to not only look at the beautiful art, but also take a moment and leave a comment of encouragement. I believe all artists enjoy receiving some feedback from other artist. There will be times when you will be able to leave an idea or a trick that you have learned to be helpful to the person. // I look forward to seeing your art. Ro
