Nice work Susan.
I really like your painting, and agree with Richard's critique. Good job!
Good design. plus pleasing colour scheme and the eye go to the centre of interest.
love this narrow composition, it really gives height to the painting which i love its like a very small slice of a big picture but at the same time it gives you so much information about the environment its portraying. Love the colours and the reflections. Great work Susan :-))
Thanks very much for your critique, Richard. You are spot-on about the things in the painting that don't work. I found rendering the trees very difficult, and the left-hand one did end up, as you say, looking like orange cotton-balls. I did attempt to paint the wispy branches, but lost the tree-ness altogether and fell back on a sort of symbolic shaped tree, which I guess is a cardinal sin for a realist painter. The other issues you mention can all be easily fixed, and I will do so. I think the real problem for me is impatience - I should have propped the painting up in the corner for a few days and given it more consideration before posting. But not to dwell on the negative - thanks so much for all the nice things you wrote about the painting as well. Your workshops have been a major factor in driving my work forward over the past year.
