Went to a life drawing group last night at the Quarry Art Centre in Whangarei. I haven't done life drawing for over 10 years, so it was quite a struggle, but I did feel like all my painting has paid of in the interim in terms of looking for the large masses and trying to be clear on what is shadow and what is light. The beauty of the drawn line is something that is great to get back in touch with - charcoal seems like such a forgiving medium too - and great for making lost edges and then really sharpening up when you want to. Learned some important things from Matthew Archambault on his drawing website which I was trying to put into practice last night - I'd do well to take up his anatomy class too - he's such an awesome drawer (not the kind you put socks in). So much to learn, so little time.
After the class last night I learned something else watching an interesting documentary about quantum physics - they said that because atoms are mainly empty space, like little solar systems, that if you put all the actual matter of everyone on the planet together (taking out the empty spaces) we'd all squash down to the size of a sugar cube. Interesting huh - we're mostly nothing. Weird.
