Starting to bring in the foreground now. Trickiest part was getting the faint sun glow through the right side of the tree. The next hardest part will be making the rest of the foreground flora interesting without being TOO interesting.
It's come up a little more red in the photograph (on my screen anyway) - it's a bit more brown than that. It's a trick I've seen used around a fair bit which does a few things:
1. (as you said) gets rid of the white canvas - stopping little bits of white poking through.
2. It's a complementary colour to the green which I knew would cover it so when any bits of it do show through it helps with the richness of the paint layer.
3. It's makes it easier to begin painting freely on a surface which is not so pristine as a white canvas.
4. It's helps provide a total colour harmony to all the colours in that area.
I have a question about the foreground color. It seems to have nothing to do with what your going for. Is it just fill color to get rid of the white canvas? Or does it have a more important function?
