Another tree but this time it was just the lowest part of a huge tree. My goal was to capture the very sharp contrast between the branches and below. I opted for warm shadows as I feel they are more inviting despite what some teach about always using cool colors in shadow areas. I believe you can do either one and it will read appropriately.

Thanks you guys. I am pretty happy with this quick study. Thanks for the compliments and the critique. Charles, I'm really not certain of what you are indicating with the last sentence on the diagonal lights? I painted what I saw, literally...the shadows and contrasting light areas were very sharp and vivid as our sky here is extremely blue making everything high contrast in the morning. Also, our soil is all dirt and dust, no grasses to speak of and so the lights are painted using yellow ochre and transparent earth orange by Gamblin. I did a wash first using the TEO first. The let it dry (using turpentine as it dries much faster than mineral spirits). Then I blocked in my lights first since there were so many. I went back in near the tree's lightest contrast in the upper left and added back in my highlighted areas which is what made me want to paint this tree.

Love the shapes and darks to play against the light. Two observations: 1) the color scheme of what looks like Naples yellow and burnt sienna against the greens could be enhanced with some notes of other colors (which could be as simple as other values of grays in the foreground) and 2) the light in the middle of the painting cuts the design on the horizontal.  Would the lights running on the diagonal from the tree (consistent with the shadow shapes) back to the left add movement and interest?
