I was intrigued by this photograph uploaded by Ro. I wanted to get the feel of the integrated shapes, rocks, trees and sky.

Congratulations on Lola's Place, Michael. That's a beautiful painting.

Hi Michael.  I like to think of it as each shape relating to the shape next to it ...kind of leading us from shape to shape ....where no shape stands in isolation with no apparent reason for being there.   Now, having said that, am I successful in doing that? ...............nope! .......I try though!

Michael - Thanks so much for the in-depth and encouraging comment.

I have been trying things with grays recently and finding that with a gray middle-ground that things around them start to pop. Which is good. And like a bunch of rowdy schoolboys all dressed in grey uniforms... yes, there is a civilizing element to them too. :-)

As far as the composition is concerned, I was trying to tie-in the shape of the rocks and the trees in a sweep from left to right. I also was trying to get across a sense of reflected masses... or better explained, a composition where the masses, whether trees or rocks or clouds reflect each other in shape and space.

But again, thanks for your in-depth comment.

Wonderful painting Michael!! .....really love your style!!   I am always interested in the color harmonies of a painting.  This looks like  a double complimentary schemed? .....very beautiful!!  One of the nice compositional element about this painting (among others), is the "eye rest" area of the beach!  Your deployment of grays makes the oranges and reds seem more vibrant then they are actually painted!! ...very nice.  At the same time, those grays tend to make  all yours colors ..........civilized!   A lot of good "learning" points on this painting if one really studies it.  Great painting Michael.

Thanks Stu. I might have been too brash with the colours, but I'm happy with the design.

Manneherrin - Thanks for the like and the encouragement. Always great to receive a comment from you. :-)

Ro - Thanks for the photo and the happy response. I really did want to abstract this, and it feels like it worked well.

Silvana - I was thinking of the comment I made to you regarding the Querido painting, i.e. letting go of the original resource picture at some point and letting the painting point you to the abstracted details. Anyway, I thought of that when I painted this. Look at the original picture of Ro's and it will give you a sense of what I'm saying.
